First Day of First Grade

Monday was the first day of first grade and try as I did to persuade my daughter to go with Hello Kitty backpack {again} or some other cute and innocent childhood icon, the Justin Bieber backpack won out. It’s not really a big deal to me, she likes some of his songs and a few of her friends had Bieber backpacks last year so I suppose emulating them is a small part of growing up. I was wondering how long it would take to get here and I didn’t think we would get here so quickly. Yet, here we are. She’s not totally 6 going on 16 though, she still has her princess lunchbox. {Thank goodness for that}

 

Rex was all in on going with a Transformers backpack this year. Last year, it was Batman. We’ve come a long way from preschool when it was all about Elmo. Isn’t it funny how, even at this young age, they’re influenced by what their peers are interested in? I’ve made a point with each of them to talk about being a leader versus a follower and that it’s alright to learn about new things but it’s not a good idea to like something just because everyone else does. We talk often and I casually ask questions to get a feel for the reasons they ask for the things they do – like Beyblades and Nintendo DS to make sure they aren’t just asking to have the same things all their friends do, but because it’s something they’re actually interested in. We’ll see how this year shapes up, what new friends they make, new skills they learn, and how they progress. Hope you’ll stick around with us!
