Did you know?
JuneĀ is the sixthĀ monthĀ of theĀ yearĀ in theĀ JulianĀ andĀ Gregorian calendarsĀ and the second month to have the length of 30Ā days. It contains theĀ summer solsticeĀ in theĀ Northern Hemisphere, the day with the most daylight hours, and theĀ winter solsticeĀ in theĀ Southern Hemisphere, the day with the fewest daylight hours (excluding polar regions in both cases). In the Northern Hemisphere it’s the seasonal equivalent toĀ DecemberĀ in the Southern Hemisphere and vice versa. In the Northern hemisphere, the beginning of the traditional astronomicalĀ summerĀ is on the 21st whereas the meteorological summer begins on the 1st. In the Southern Hemisphere, meteorological winter begins on 1 June.
TheĀ LatinĀ name for June isĀ Junius.Ā OvidĀ offers multiple etymologies for the name in theĀ Fasti, a poem about theĀ Roman calendar. The first is that the month is named after theĀ Roman goddessĀ Juno, the goddess of marriage and the wife of the supreme deityĀ Jupiter; the second is that the name comes from the Latin wordĀ iuniores, meaning “younger ones”, as opposed toĀ maioresĀ (“elders”) for which the preceding month MayĀ (Maius)Ā may be named.[1]
CertainĀ meteor showersĀ take place in June. TheĀ ArietidsĀ takes place May 22 to July 2 each year, and peaks on June 7. TheĀ Beta TauridsĀ June 5 to July 18. TheĀ June BootidsĀ take place roughly between 26 June and 2 July each year.
