{Meet} Mary of NC Mommy Moment
1. How long have you been blogging?
I’ve been blogging since the end of July… well, technically, I started a blog five years ago when I needed a space to write about my wanderings. I finished grad school and had difficulty finding a job so I was part of the 20-something generation migration that moved back home to live with their parents. After landing a position in DC, I went “full steam ahead” with work and my blog quickly became defunct. I started contemplating blogging a few months ago, but I had writer’s block. In July, I realized that if I was to start writing again, I had to be ‘true to myself’ and write about what interested me and not worry about my audience. Thus my new blog, NC Mommy Moment, was born.
2. What do you blog about?
I blog about personal reflections, family, food, parenting, and North Carolina, and a bit of travel.
3. Where are you blogging from in NC?
I blog from the Triangle Area.
4. Why did you start blogging?
I know that my experience in North Carolina is unique. I didn’t grow up here, I grew up in NJ. We all know there are differences. (When I first arrived, one time a barista was taking more than two minutes to get my coffee and I felt my body tense up out of stress because he was taking too long!). What I didn’t expect was that North Carolina would grow on me. I’ve come to appreciate it’s natural beauty, good food, and I am blessed to have found a workplace that I truly enjoy. Once I started to embrace the idea that North Carolina might be a place where my family and I settle, I started enjoying life a little more and being comfortable with myself. There’s a huge difference between being 27 then, and 32 now. Unlike before when I wrote in order to find meaning, now I am more comfortable with who I am, and so I knew I had to start writing again.
5. Out of all the posts you’ve written, which one (or two) would you pick as your favorite?
Can’t say! NC Nature with your Tot, maybe?
6. What blog(s) do you love?
20-Nothings and CookingWithAWallflower
7. What’s one piece of advice you’d share with your fellow bloggers?
Oh no! I have three. 1) Be your own advocate. My mentor/colleague once gave this piece of advice to me. I think it transformed me from being an observer to a participant. 2) Set realistic goals. 3) Don’t be too hard on yourself. If you are not getting where you want to be (in life), think again about your range of options, then do the option which you think is best. If you move forward with that option (move to another city, quit a job, end a relationship), you know why you picked this over other options, and you are ‘becoming’ what you dare to become.
8. What are you looking forward to as a blogger in the upcoming months (conferences, big blog release, book release, publishing, community, redesign, new content, etc)?
No immediate goals other than to continue writing.

And finally, is there anything else you’d like to add that you want people to know about you – professional affiliations, any other place they can find you, etc? My 20-something decade was a rollercoaster. I’ve done policy, social services, teaching, and now I’m a program coordinator at a university in Durham.
