Get to know Brittany of Pretty Handy Girl

1. How long have you been blogging?

Almost 5 years

2. What do you blog about?

I write detailed DIY tutorials for home improvement, home repairs, crafting, sewing and home decorating.

3. Why did you start blogging?

I saw a big gap in the number of women and men that knew how to use power tools or would take on simple home repairs or improvements. I wanted to empower women to feel comfortable picking up a power tool. I planned on hosting workshops in my garage to teach people how to build, how to use power tools and simple home repairs. When I told my husband about my idea he squashed it with one sentence, “I think you could reach more people with a blog.” After a day or two I started Pretty Handy Girl in June of 2010 and I never stopped. In hindsight, my garage workshops may have reached 100 – 150 people per year. The blog reaches 400,000 people a month on average. I rarely admit this, but I think my husband was right.

4. What is your FAVORITE post you’ve ever written (you can pick 2)?
Wow, that’s a tough question. I’ll give you a DIY tutorial that is an easy makeover and I’ll share with you an empowering post to encourage people that they can DIY.

5. What blog do you love?

Again, I have to pick just one? I love a lot of blogs, you can see them on my DIY blog list. But, a recent favorite is Sarah’s Big Idea. Her writing style has so much humor and she likes to include music video references into her project posts. I love seeing the results of her “big ideas”.

6. What is your biggest piece of advice for other bloggers?

Start blogging because you enjoy sharing and writing. Don’t start a blog to make money. The internet is much more saturated with blogs now. If you start because you love to blog, it will show. If you start a blog because you want to make money, it will be hard to attract readers and to stay motivated.

7. What are you looking forward to for you as a blogger in the upcoming months (conferences, big blog release, book release, publishing, community, redesign, new content, etc)?
I’m actually most excited to start new projects. For me a new DIY project means new blog content. This year I hope to finish a pantry with built in cabinetry and sliding shelving; a major master bathroom makeover; and I’m hoping to purchase a foreclosure house to flip. In the meantime, I’ll be continuing to blog about all of it.

Later this month, my kitchen and our boys’ bathroom will be featured in Kitchen and Bath Makeovers (a Better Homes and Garden special publication.) I’m truly honored to have my home featured. It makes all those months of slaving away on our kitchen worth the effort.

The only conference I’m planning on attending this year is the Haven Conference in Atlanta this summer. It’s a good conference for anyone who blogs about their home because the sponsors align really well with DIY around the home and garden.
