How to Stay Motivated When Life Gets Tough
Life can be full of challenges, setbacks, and obstacles that can make staying motivated and focused on your goals hard. Whether it’s a personal struggle, a career setback, or a global crisis, there are times when it can feel like everything is against you. However, staying motivated is crucial for achieving success, happiness, and fulfillment in life. Here are some tips on how to stay motivated when life gets tough:
- Remember Your Why
When you’re facing a difficult situation, it’s easy to lose sight of why you started in the first place. Remind yourself of your purpose, your passion, and your values. Why did you choose this path? What do you hope to achieve? What motivates you? Focusing on your why can help you stay committed and driven, even when the road gets rough.

- Break it Down
Big goals can be overwhelming, especially when you’re facing challenges. Instead of focusing on the big picture, break it down into smaller, manageable steps. What’s the next thing you can do to move forward? What’s the smallest action you can take? Breaking it down lets you make progress one step at a time, which can help you feel more motivated and confident.
- Celebrate Small Wins
It’s easy to overlook the small wins when you’re facing a tough time. However, celebrating even the smallest progress can boost your motivation and confidence. Did you complete a task? Did you make a good decision? Did you learn something new? Celebrate it! Acknowledge your progress and give yourself credit for your efforts.

- Find Support
When you’re feeling down, having a support system is important. Whether it’s a friend, a mentor, or a therapist, having someone to talk to can help you gain perspective, find solutions, and feel less alone. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help when you need it.
- Practice Self-Care
When life gets tough, it’s easy to neglect self-care. However, taking care of yourself is essential for staying motivated and resilient. Make time for activities that bring you joy, relaxation, and fulfillment. Eat well, exercise, and get enough sleep. Practice mindfulness, meditation, or other forms of self-reflection. You can boost your energy, reduce stress, and increase your motivation by prioritizing your well-being.

This is an article that I wrote some time ago and had been sitting in drafts. What I’d add today is to read your Bible daily, sign up for a daily devotional to encourage you (I like ourdailyverse.com and the Bible App by youversion.com), and get in a good Bible-based church and/or Bible study group.
Also, I’d suggest writing down your favorite scriptures to go back to when times are tough, and even some of yor favorite quotes. One of my favorites is Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” If that isn’t a wonderful reminder, I don’t know what is!
“The darker the night the brighter the stars. The deeper the grief the closer is God.”
